Reserved For You...

It's that time of the year again....ADMISSIONS!!! However, this time its directly concerned to me, as I soon will be entering F.Y.J.C (hopefully). But like any other General-category S.S.C. student, I am shockingly outraged to see the advantages that the O.B.C.'s and S.T.'s and all the other wonderfully abbreviated castes enjoy. I got 95.82% in S.S.C, yet didn't get into my first-choice college in the first list; while a bloke with 80% gets in! This is not bitterness, as I may eventually get an admission there, but what about the poor blokes that got 92-93%? They may not even stand a chance! Besides, the chasm between the fees is also great. The Open-category guys have to pay 10 times what the others pay. This definitely enters my concept of injustice.

Another topic that is indirectly connected to this demon called reservation is the inclusion of castes in Census 2011. The 15-20 year-olds of today don't actually care whether they are C.K.P's or Brahmins or G.S.B's. However, this system gives the so-called backward castes to enjoy special privileges in almost every field of social, academic and economic life. Those families and individuals wishing to continue the separate set of beliefs and rituals that come along with every caste may independently do so, but there is no need to officially formalize people as a S.T. or Sonaar by stamping it on their Unique Identification Identity .

THE SOLUTION: A month ago, when people used to ask me for an alternative as soon as I began a rant on this topic, I used to immediately shut up and start thinking. (Nice phrase, isn't it? 'Shut up and start thinking'). WHAT could be done? An alternative method to inclusion of caste-system in the database of our beloved Government is to keep a real-time database of every individual's income. It is easier said than done, but so is the entire UID project and the Census. Then we could form separate poverty lines for economically different areas of India. For example, an income of Rs.5000 p.m may be sufficient in Bihar, but in Mumbai, it is extremely difficult to make even ends meet. Then we could provide reservations on the basis of what each person earns, truly based on a system that measures the amount of facilities and opportunities that a child/adult gets during his lifetime, and not on something that is inherited by him/her from his past generations. Till then I shall continue to be shockingly outraged...
